Bespoke 3D Design and Printing: A Custom Miniature Sofa Project

The seat module, with its cushion and backrest incorporated into one complete print.

Bespoke 3D Design and Printing: A Miniature Sofa Commission

A customer came to us through Etsy with a question: could we 3D print a miniature sofa? They had reference images to explain the idea, and wanted to find out whether it was possible and what it would cost.

That enquiry became a bespoke commission covering custom 3D design, preparation and printing: three module designs, two of each, making six finished pieces in white matte PLA.

Turning a reference into a 3D model

For this project, our work began with creating the digital model. The customer's reference images provided a starting point for the appearance, while the order brief defined the pieces we needed to produce.

The sofa details were part of the design too. The seat cushions, back cushions and pillows have shaped edges and creases that give the miniature pieces their upholstered appearance, despite being printed in rigid plastic.

This is where bespoke 3D design and printing come together: developing the form of the model while accounting for how the finished object needs to be made.

Three module designs, printed as complete pieces

The order included two of each module:

- A simple cushioned base, shown as a footstool in the finished layouts.

- A seat module with a backrest.

- A corner or end module with a backrest, side rest and pillow details.

Each module was printed as one complete piece. Its cushion and pillow details were incorporated into the print, so there were no individual cushions to attach or small components to assemble.

All six modules were printed in plain white matte PLA for a consistent finish across the set.

One set, different sofa layouts

The finished photographs show how the separate modules can be arranged into different configurations, from a compact sofa with a footstool to a longer sofa or an L-shaped layout.

That flexibility is an important part of this commission. The pieces work together as a set, while remaining separate modules that can be repositioned.
