Bespoke 3D Printed Perfume Caps

Bespoke 3D Printed Perfume Caps: From Design Idea to Finished Batch

A perfume bottle cap needs to fit, but it can also bring colour and character to the finished bottle. For this bespoke commission, the brief brought those practical and visual requirements together: custom caps that would sit over existing perfume pumps and complement a collection of colourful labels.

The project took us from an initial enquiry without a ready-made 3D file through design development, test prints and a finished batch in four colour combinations.

Starting with an idea and existing bottles

Our customer had a clear starting point: striped perfume caps inspired by the colours of their stained-glass-style label artwork.

They supplied sample bottles and existing caps so we could explore the fit alongside the appearance. The brief covered three bottle sizes with a common inner fitting, opening up the possibility of different outer cap sizes while keeping the same fitting inside.

The aim was to bring the outer proportions of each cap closer to the width of its bottle. That made the shape and dimensions part of the design work from the beginning.

Exploring the design through test prints

We produced initial variations to test the fit and proportions on the largest bottle, exploring ridged and wavy forms alongside different surface finishes.

Physical prototypes gave the customer something to assess beyond a concept image. They helped move the discussion towards a preferred shape, finish and colour direction.

We also explored carrying elements of the label artwork onto the top of the cap. After reviewing a test print, the customer preferred the simpler wavy striped design, leaving the label to carry the more intricate artwork.

That feedback helped refine the design around the overall appearance of the bottle.

Working on the fit as well as the finish

Alongside the visual development, we checked how the caps fitted over the existing pumps. Early prototypes allowed us to assess that fit using the supplied bottles, and we arranged to provide samples in each size for the customer to inspect.

This practical stage is a valuable part of bespoke 3D design and printing. A sample can help answer questions about size, proportions and fit before a larger batch is produced.

Bringing the colour combinations into production

The finished batch brings together four distinct colour combinations, with striped sides and plain coloured tops. The photograph shows the range together, while the videos offer a closer look at caps being printed and the finished pieces being arranged.

The result is a set of bespoke perfume caps developed around the customer's existing bottles and visual brief, with colour and shape considered alongside the fitting.
